CERRE in L’Echo: Regulating online hate speech

  • 12 August 2019

Belgian newspaper L’Echo interviewed CERRE’s Director General, Bruno Liebhaberg, to find out more about online hate speech regulation around Europe.

The recent mass killings in the United States have highlighted the problem of the dissemination of online hate speech. Regulating online hate speech has become necessary but it has proven a very complex issue.

“We have to be very cautious. While platforms’ self-regulation has merits, it has also shown its limits. On the other hand, we cannot overregulate because we must guarantee freedom of speech. It’s a matter of finding the right balance. […] In the end, we might need to regulate at the European level to really be effective.” – Bruno Liebhaberg
