DEBATE: Global online platforms – which regulatory models?

  • 22 June 2020

CERRE brought together Vĕra Jourová, Vice-President of the European Commission, in charge of Values and Transparency, and Brad Smith, Microsoft’s President, to discuss the future of global online platforms regulation in an ever more fragmented world.

Digital technologies and the online platforms we use every day may be global. Yet, it is less and less the case for their regulation. Increasing divergences between continents pose the question of the future of digital regulation.

How will the EU assert its regulatory model when the digital race is accelerating and the world is fragmenting? Are EU values compatible with Europe’s innovation capability and pace? How will global online platforms deal with increasing regulatory fragmentation?
