On Monday 8 November, CERRE Director General Bruno Liebhaberg was invited to meet with a delegation of seven MPs and peers from the UK Parliament’s Joint Select Committee on the Draft Online Safety Bill.
The delegation had travelled to Brussels to gather expert input from the European Commission and Parliament as well as from a small number of stakeholders, including our think tank, on the EU’s approach to tackling online illegal and harmful content and to setting tailored obligations and accountability rules on these issues for providers of network infrastructure, hosting service providers and in particular online platforms.
Bruno Liebhaberg shared his assessment of the proposal from the European Commission on the Digital Services Act currently discussed in the European Parliament and in the Council. He also highlighted and discussed the similar objectives and also, on a number of issues, the differences in approach between the OSB and the DSA.
Finally, he emphasised the need for increased international cooperation between regulators through, among others, information sharing gateways to allow sharing of information without prejudice to confidentiality of commercial and non-commercial data, and cross-border enforcement.
