Professor Tommaso Valletti appointed as Chief Economist at DG Competition
CERRE is delighted to share the news that Professor Tommaso Valletti, a Joint Academic Director of CERRE, has been appointed as the new Chief Economist of the European Commission’s DG Competition. He will take up his duties on 1 September 2016.
Tommaso brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He is currently a Professor of Economics at both Imperial College Business School and at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. In addition to his work with CERRE, he is a member of the panel of academic advisors of OFCOM, the UK’s communications regulator, and was already a member of DG Competition’s Economic Advisory Group on Competition Policy. Tommaso has advised numerous international bodies, including the OECD and the World Bank, on issues such as network interconnection, mobile telephony markets and spectrum auctions. His widely published work covers a range of topics in the areas of industrial economics, regulation and telecommunications economics.
Tommaso has been a key member of CERRE’s academic team since 2013 and has been involved in several high-profile research projects. Most recently, he led a ground-breaking CERRE study on the effects of market concentration on both prices and investment in the mobile communications sector.
The CERRE team wishes him all the best in his new role.
